Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington,D.C. ,and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.

After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.

Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantanstic novels, including Fames and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

世界奇幻文学大师——罗尔德·达尔，出生于英国，父母都是挪威人，早年曾在壳牌石油公司非洲的分支机构任职。第二次世界大战爆发后，他参加了英国空军，当过战斗机飞行员。他是一位即为成人也为孩子写作的作家，还曾经写过几部007电影剧本。其中作品中多有恐怖情节和闹剧风味，故事构思奇特、想像新颖、明快多变、富于夸张，从一开始就能打破现实与幻想之间的常规对位，给人一种或幽默感、或机智、或荒诞的美感。他因其他作品风格的独树一帜而于1952年和1954年两度获得“爱伦·坡文学奖”，并于后来获得英国的“白面包”奖，该奖评委会对其作品的评价是：“滑稽，机智，又有趣又吓人…”到目前为止，达尔的作品在世界各地都已售出了上千万册。
